September 4, 2009. Durango, CO. - Cold winds, a lenghty lighting delay and one of the latest starts in FLC soccer history wasn't enough to stop the Skyhawks from extending their undefeated record. Fort Lewis down 0-1 at half, put together three unanswered second half goals to defeat the Red Storm of Dixie State 3-1 earlier this evening.
In the first half the Skyhawks were able to control the majority of possession but when a long bouncing pass from Dixie State forced FLC goalkeeper Zane Wells to come out gave a Red Storm player the opportunity to chip the ball over Wells' head for the first goal of the game. In a rare occasion the Skyhawks went into locker room down 0-1.
When the Skyhawks realized they were down, the switch flipped and it was apparent they weren't going to let the game slip away. Fort Lewis came out and fired more than 15 shots in the half, three which found the back of the net. The scoring spree started when senior Sam Morris found junior Euan Purcell in the box for an easy touch goal and 1-1 score. The second goal which was the highlight of the game occurred when a free kick was issued to Sam Morris from 30 yards out and close to the Skyhawk bench. Morris bended it like Beckham over the defense and past the keeper for an amazing 2-1 goal. The final goal came after a shot was blocked by the Dixie keeper which bounced to sophomore Dimo Krymanidis who found Purcell once again in the box for the final score, his second, making it 3-1.
The Skyhawks who are now 3-0 will travel to Texas to face off against St. Edwards on Friday, September 11 and then on to Incarnate Word on Sunday, September 13.
